Gastroenterology is concerned with the study of the functioning and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It encompasses a detailed understanding of the physiology of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (also known as motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ.

At Pranaam, our team comprising some of the best gastroenterologists in Hyderabad, specializes in preventing, diagnosing and treating digestive tract and liver disorders. Working in a state-of-the-art environment with world class technologies, our specialists adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to provide patients with holistic treatment for better overall health.

Among the sophisticated gastroenterology resources are the latest in endoscopic equipment and minimally invasive techniques to check and treat problems of the digestive tract, while ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding tissues.
Since accurate diagnosis is the beginning of all successful treatment, our gastroenterologists are skilled in performing the following procedures:

Conditions treated

Gastroparesis is a condition that affects the spontaneous movement of the muscles in the stomach, which propel food through the digestive tract. It can lead to a slowing down or non-working of the stomach’s motility, causing digestive disorders, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain as well as problems with blood sugar levels and nutrition.

GERD occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back up into the mouth through the esophagus. This action, called acid reflux, can irritate the lining of the esophagus and cause it to become inflamed. If left untreated, the inflammation can lead to narrowing of the esophagus, an open ulcer in the esophagus and increases risk of esophageal cancer.

Peptic ulcers are open sores that are found on the inside lining of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine, and are a result of stomach acids eating away the digestive tract’s protective layer of mucus. If left untreated, peptic ulcers can result in internal bleeding, perforation in the stomach wall, obstruction in the passage of food and an increased risk of gastric cancer.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes irritation, inflammation and ulcers in the innermost lining of the large intestine and rectum. It may be a result of an immune system malfunction and can be debilitating, at times leading to life-threatening complications. Ulcerative colitis is classified into various types depending upon its location in the body – Ulcerative proctitis (rectum), Proctosigmoiditis (rectum & lower end of colon), Left-sided colitis (rectum up through left side of the colon), and Pancolitis (entire colon).

Gallstones are pieces of solid material that form in the gallbladder, a small organ under the liver which stores and releases bile to help in digestion. Made up of hardened deposits of digestive fluid, gallstones range from the size of a grain of sand to that of a golf ball. They can cause complications such as inflammation of the gallbladder, blockage of the bile and pancreatic ducts, and increased risk of gallbladder cancer. Treatment options for gallstones include surgery to remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy).

The pancreas is the organ that produces enzymes that help in the digestion of food as well as insulin, which controls the sugar level in the blood. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas and is most commonly caused by gallstones or alcoholism. It can lead to serious complications including kidney failure, breathing problems, infection, pseudocyst, malnutrition, diabetes and increasing risk of pancreatic cancer.

Cholangitis is an inflammation of the bile ducts which carry digestive liquid bile from the liver to the small intestine. It is usually a result of infection caused by a blockage due to gallstones, strictures, parasites or tumours. The disease can lead to complications such as liver failure, repeated infections, portal hypertension, osteoporosis, and increased risk of bile duct and colon cancer.

Colon or intestinal polyps are small clumps of cells that form abnormal growths on the lining of the intestinal tract. Since colon polyps usually don’t cause any symptoms, regular screening tests like colonoscopy are essential for detection at an early stage for safe and complete removal. While most colon polyps are benign, some can develop into colon cancer, which if detected late may prove life threatening.

IBS is a chronic condition that affects the gastrointestinal tract and may need to be managed over the long term. Common symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both. Those suffering from IBS experience poor quality of life and mood disorders that can, in turn, lead to aggravating the symptoms.

There's nothing blissful than hearing a child's laugh or watch them grow right before our eyes. It's another story when their health takes a different turn and our hearts ache while they lay incapacitated with a chronic disease or health condition.
